Located at the foot of Mount Currie, Pemberton was founded in 1858 and incorporated in 1956. Originally reached only by water, the village of Pemberton was home first to peoples of the Interior Salish who settled at the base of Mount Currie and the head of Lillooet Lake. Along with those seeking gold, other Europeans settled on the rich farmland nearby in the late 1880’s. The local population increased with the building of a passenger train in 1914 which provided easier access to the Pemberton Valley for those who chose to farm when there was no longer access to gold. Today, travel to Pemberton is easy along a thirty minute stretch of Highway 99 from Whistler.
The Pemberton Valley was first famous for growing seed potatoes but now agriculture is more diverse with natural beef, fruit, vegetables and dairy products. Pemberton also has several organic farms which are acquiring a reputation for providing fresh, organic and local produce to the Sea to Sky markets and to some markets in Vancouver. The clean air, rich soil and warm climate support the growing of root crops, some of which are used in a vodka distillery, also found in Pemberton.
Tourism continues to grow in Pemberton. Recreational opportunities abound and include: horseback riding, gliding, skateboarding, canoeing and kayaking, cycling and mountain biking, swimming, camping, hiking, and fishing. In winter months, the area is popular with snowmobilers. Many tourists visit each year to see the spectacular Nairn Falls and to hike to the stunning glaciers and turquoise water in nearby Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.
Amenities in Pemberton include: two golf courses, elementary and secondary schools, child care facilities, a community centre, a museum, medical centre, police and fire station, a library, local shops and convenience stores, light industry, farmers markets and an airport.
In recent years Pemberton has been growing in population. The 2011 census notes that it is one of the fastest growing communities in BC. Today there are approximately 2500 people in the Village and local neighbourhoods. The beauty of the Valley, along with unlimited recreational, commercial and residential opportunities makes Pemberton a desirable place to call home.
Why Pemberton? People are choosing Pemberton as a place to live because of its interesting blend of history and growth, the old and the new, because of its unsurpassed outdoor lifestyle, and because of the affordable and easily accessible residential (condominiums, townhomes, single family dwellings), farming and commercial space. Neighbourhoods include: The Village, and the Pemberton Benchlands, Plateau and Meadows.
