The community of Britannia Beach is located thirty minutes north of West Vancouver and one hour to the Resort Municipality of Whistler. Boasting some of the finest ocean and mountain views along the Sea to Sky Highway, Britannia Beach is also known for its moderate climate.
In 1888 Dr. A. A. Forbes discovered copper in the mountainous area nearby leading to the development of the mine at Britannia Beach. During the late twenties and early thirties, the mine becoming the largest producer of copper in the British Commonwealth. A small town and residential area grew on the site along with the mine. The Anaconda Mining Company bought the property and continued mining for the next eleven years, when high operating costs and taxes forced its closure on November 1, 1974. Britannia Beach has a rich history with many events and activities taking place between its opening and closure for those interested in learning more about this community.
The BC Museum of Mining was opened to the public on April 1, 1975 and was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988. In 1989 the Museum site was designated a British Columbia Historic Landmark. With considerable improvement, restoration and expansion, the museum was renamed the Britannia Mine Museum in 2010 and has become an important site for tourists along the Sea to Sky corridor with more than thirty thousand visiting the site in 2010 and double that number the following year.
The village near the Britannia mine offers stunning scenery, mining history, and unique arts and crafts. Other amenities include a gourmet coffee house, restaurant, grocery store, art gallery, adventure centre and a few more shops. Ten minutes away, the town of Squamish has additional convenience shops, banks and other necessities.
More recently, environmental issues caused by mining have been dealt with and recovery is well underway in the area. New homes and building lots are being added to the community. Plans are underway for a new development project called the Village at Britannia Beach which promises a sustainable community for living, working and recreation.
Why Britannia Beach? Incredibly beautiful scenery, a quiet community, affordable building lots, homes and business sites and amazing views of Howe Sound make this oceanfront community an ideal place to call home.
