The Lion’s Bay Story

Lions Bay is a village municipality located between Horseshoe Bay and Squamish along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, north of Vancouver. Horseshoe Bay is about ten kilometres south of Lions Bay and Squamish about thirty three kilometres north. It is roughly a thirty minute drive from Lions Bay to downtown Vancouver.

Historically, Lions Bay was a small summer cottage community only accessible by water. The community grew with in population with the development of the railroad to Squamish in 1956 and later when the original highway was constructed in 1958. Today, the community is easily accessible along the new and improved Highway 99 and the population has grown to around 1800 with over 500 residences.

Steep topography in the area has resulted in construction of many site-specific homes giving the village a variety of interesting architecture. Great views of Howe Sound and the majestic local mountains are offered everywhere in Lions Bay.

Activities in the area include hiking, boating, scuba diving in nearby Porteau Cove, and swimming at nearby beaches. There are several golf courses nearby and world class skiing north of Lions Bay at Whistler Blackcomb. One of our premier hikes in the lower mainland is to ‘The Lions’, landmark mountains accessible by hiking from a trail head which begins near Lions Bay. According to geologists these two peaks which look like lion heads, are the remnants of a volcanic cone. The West Lion stands at 5,401 feet (1646 m) and the East Lion at 5,245 feet (1599 m).

Lions Bay is known for its writers, artists and musicians. Amenities include a marina, a cafe, a general store, a library and community school and an art gallery.
